I utilize materials that are the most accessible according to my situation while also trying to make the biggest statement possible. In the last two years of undergrad I focused mainly on ceramics because 3-dimensional objects take up space and the observer is forced to acknowledge its existence. More recently, I’ve been working on painting small canvases that range in subject matter from abstract lava flows to traditional landscapes.
My art draws from my experiences of living on a rural farm and its inherent, conflicting realities. Surrounded by life and death, love and violence, birth and illness, I understood the complexities of life at an early age. When I was young I tried to make delicate works that denied my harsh experiences, but they were less successful. After years of trying, I decided to embrace my creations. Today, my works are roughly made and are never what could be considered “perfect,” they reflect the irregularities of nature.
